Council weighs aesthetics funding for Mountain View Corridor bridges
Summary
UDOT is offering $100,000 per intersection for bridge betterments on Mountain View Corridor; Herriman's allotment totals $550,000 but some bridge lettering/fence choices exceed that amount by roughly $5,775, prompting council discussion about consistency with neighboring cities.

The council discussed proposed aesthetic betterments for the Mountain View Corridor at its Feb. 11 meeting after staff presented UDOT’s design proposals and a city cost breakdown.
UDOT is offering $100,000 per intersection for aesthetic funding tied to the corridor project. Staff said Herriman’s total allotment across its bridges would be $550,000; proposed upgrades include replacing standard chain-link bridge fencing with wrought iron and installing consistent bridge lettering that would identify the city on each structure.
Staff showed cost estimates and said that in some instances the desired fencing and lettering would exceed the $100,000-per-intersection allotment; one example in the presentation exceeded the city’s $550,000 allocation by about $5,775. Council members discussed whether to accept UDOT’s standard or seek an upgraded, consistent look across jurisdictions and asked whether neighboring cities would adopt the same approach.
Several council members noted the potential for inconsistent signage where a bridge sits between two jurisdictions and said they would provide feedback to staff for UDOT coordination. Staff asked whether the council preferred immediate feedback or more time to review; council consensus was to take the information and, if needed, follow up with more detailed direction.
Next steps: staff will collect council feedback to share with UDOT and neighboring cities and will return with more detailed cost information if the council requests a specific betterment plan.
