Somerset council adjusts 2026 meeting calendar to avoid Yom Kippur, cancels August and December work sessions

The council moved the Sept. 21 work session to Sept. 22 to avoid falling on Yom Kippur, voted to cancel both the August council meeting and work session, and removed the December 21 work session from the calendar unless later needed.
A council member noted that Sept. 21 begins at sundown and likely conflicts with residents observing the holiday. "I don't think that that would be a good day," the council member said, proposing the shift to Sept. 22. Other members emphasized that residents and staff plan vacations in August and that publishing a stable calendar earlier helps the public make plans.
The motion to amend the calendar — which included moving the Sept. meeting, canceling the August meetings and removing the December work session — was seconded and approved by voice vote. Council members said the town will still schedule additional meetings in June or July if necessary.
The council asked staff to publish the revised calendar as soon as possible so residents can plan around the confirmed meeting dates.
