Supervisor Jason Capel presented a proposal on Feb. 10 to form a Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to improve connections between residents and county parks staff and to help prioritize recreational projects.
Capel described a draft structure of seven voting members — five district representatives and two at-large seats — with the ability to create nonvoting subcommittees and working groups for youth, adult and senior activities. "This would be a committee that would connect the community to parks and rec in the county and help us understand what the community really would like to see," Capel said, noting bylaws had been drafted and circulated to staff and board members for review.
Several supervisors voiced support for the idea, noting strong public interest in youth sports and facility use and recommending that bylaws be posted for public review before formal action. The board agreed to place the bylaws and a formal establishment item on the Feb. 24 meeting agenda to allow public visibility and an opportunity to approve the committee structure.
Board discussion included how board liaisons would be chosen, the committee’s role versus the existing parks foundation, and expectations for future CIP project recommendations that could follow from the advisory group’s work.
