Chester County proclaims Jan. 19 Martin Luther King Jr. Day; MLK community plans 25th-anniversary events in Kennett Square

The Chester County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Jan. 19, 2026 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Chester County and presented the proclamation to Carol Black of the local MLK community organization.
Commissioner Mann Moskowitz read the proclamation, noting Congress designated the holiday in 1994 as a national day of volunteer service and that local nonprofits, faith-based groups, schools and agencies will host events honoring Dr. King's legacy. "Now therefore be it resolved that the Board of Commissioners, County of Chester, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby proclaims 01/19/2026 as Martin Luther King Junior Day in Chester County," the proclamation said.
Carol Black accepted the proclamation on behalf of the MLK community, described the group's 25th-anniversary celebration at Kennett High School on Jan. 19 and highlighted event details, including a fellowship breakfast at about 9:30 a.m., a keynote address by Dr. Karsania Wise Whitehead, music from the Lincoln University gospel choir and an afternoon "Be a King" volunteer fair bringing nonprofits together with prospective volunteers. Black invited commissioners and residents to attend and directed those seeking tickets to mlkcommunity.org.
The proclamation was signed by the three commissioners and will remain on the county record.
