Coppell moves forward with ADA‑focused council chambers redesign

City architects presented schematic designs for an ADA‑focused remodel of the Coppell council chambers and the adjacent conference room, and council members signaled support for the current direction.
Jamie (project lead) said the existing chambers "no longer meets current functionality, accessibility, or technology standards" and that the design goals are to "create a welcoming, dignified civic space" while balancing durability and cost. The team described rotating the dais for a more balanced layout, removing an awkward ramp and steps by using an ADA‑compliant slope, and pushing back the hospitality wall about five feet to enlarge the presentation area in the conference room.
The schematic phase focuses on layout, HVAC and major systems, and the designers presented finish options under a "good, better, best" approach to allow value engineering. The subcommittee will continue to review materials, detailed drawings and cost estimates; the architect told council the next presentation to council would be for a construction award.
Council members offered immediate praise. Council member Nevills called the orientation change "absolutely beautiful" and said the new layout would improve accessibility for residents who use wheelchairs; other members echoed appreciation for the improved functionality and inclusive design.
Project staff said they will continue schematic development with the council subcommittee and return with refined costs and a proposed construction schedule prior to formal award.
