The Stevens Point Area Public School District board on Feb. 9 approved a plan to form a 40–47 member community task force to guide a long-range facilities, enrollment and programming review.
Mark, who joined the meeting by phone as the district’s project lead, told the board the proposed group would include roughly 15 parents with children in the district, 15 community residents who do not currently have students in district schools, 15 staff members representing a variety of employee groups, and two board members who would participate but not vote. "So we're thinking we are going to have 15 members that are parents with children in the district. 15 members who are residents of the community who currently do not have, students in the district... and then 15 staff members," Mark said during his presentation.
The plan lays out nine task-force meetings from April through December and related planning sessions. The administration said it will open applications immediately and close them around March 11 so the district can assemble the group and begin work in April. "We would let people know right up front when we send out the information this week on the application, what those meeting dates are and what time and place that those meetings would take place," Mark said.
Board members asked how the district would ensure broad representation and how applicants would be selected if interest exceeds slots. One board member warned the March 11 deadline is a tight window: "March 11 is the deadline. That's a month away. They're gonna and I I don't wanna miss people who will come up and say, well, what's this out loud? I never heard about this," the member said, urging clear public protocols in the application packet.
After discussion, a motion to approve the project purpose and task force long-range facilities plan was moved and seconded and carried.
Next steps: the administration will post the application and outreach details on district social channels and the website, assemble the planning group noted in the presentation and return to the board in March with an update and further direction from the task force.
