Resident questions airport board size; resignation and legal warning from hospital district letter noted

Public comment at the Feb. 10 Granite County Commission meeting focused on the county's airport advisory board, its size and recent correspondence.

Jack Foster, identified in public comment, asked why the airport advisory board had seven members and suggested reducing it to five to reflect volunteer availability and maintenance needs. Commissioners said the larger membership grew from historic operational needs (separate northern and southern valley representation and people with aviation expertise) but agreed it was reasonable to examine reducing the board if there are not seven qualified volunteers.

Separately, commissioner Justine (speaker 8) read into the record a paragraph from a letter by Gary Snyder addressing the airport board; the paragraph states that Snyder resigned from the Granite County Airport Board and warns of "potential future legal involvement" and that the commission chairman, Scott Adler, "should be primarily and individually responsible for any and all legal costs." The paragraph was placed on the record by Justine and noted as correspondence; commissioners said the correspondence had arrived that morning and would be uploaded to the county website.

Speaker 4 (commissioner) said the county needs to coordinate with airport staff on what constitutes an emergency for nighttime landings and that the issue will be taken up with the airport board. Commissioners also noted they are still waiting for the airport board to select a chairman.

The commission did not take formal action regarding the resignation paragraph at the meeting; staff indicated the correspondence would be posted online and that the airport-board membership and emergency-landing protocol would be examined in a future agenda item.
