Town and community events, candidate forum and Black History Month tribute announced

At the start of the consent‑agenda discussion the meeting heard several community announcements. Noreen Gorgon, identified as editor in chief of Vox Populi, announced a virtual candidate forum in March that will be moderated and recorded; she said registration is required and that a recording will be posted on YouTube for those who cannot attend live. “We’re insisting that people register so that we can...control the crowd,” Gorgon said, adding that the town provided printed information on the event.

Town staff also described cultural programming: a Black History tribute is on display through March 27, with an artist reception scheduled for Feb. 19 at the Arts and Heritage Center. Commissioners highlighted Heritage Day as well‑attended and thanked staff and public works for support. A March 7 fundraiser at the Oakland Nature Preserve was announced; the event is limited to about 125 guests and includes food and a boardwalk walk.

A commissioner urged the town to consider a more permanent recognition for Willie Welch, a longtime town official and former sheriff who served decades in town government, suggesting a named area or feature to honor his legacy. The commission did not take a formal vote on any memorial or naming during the meeting.
