"I am asking administration, and my fellow trustees to explore the possibility of expanding our voting days as well as the voting hours," he said, pointing to other jurisdictions that have expanded weekend hours and longer early‑voting windows.
County and election staff explained that election hours and polling schedules are administered collaboratively with multiple jurisdictions and that changing hours for a May election can be logistically difficult because many entities (cities, college, other municipalities) co‑ordinate orders and some have already called elections. Staff noted a pending state law effort to standardize early‑voting windows in future cycles, potentially reducing the mid‑cycle gaps between early voting and election day.
Trustees agreed it was unlikely to change hours for the current cycle, but they asked administration to pursue options for future elections, including coordination with Smith County and neighboring entities and exploring the feasibility and costs of extended weekday evening hours or additional early‑voting days. The board approved the election order as presented (one trustee recorded opposition).
