Speedway board adopts handbook updates, sets district-wide elementary grading scale

The Board of Trustees for the School Town of Speedway voted unanimously Feb. 10 to adopt recommended changes to the student-parent handbook, including a new, district-wide elementary grading scale and several policy housekeeping items.

Administrator Mr. Disney (title not specified in the transcript) told trustees the packet included an executive summary and a marked-up handbook showing recommended edits. He said the district is updating the school calendar to 2026–27, removing an outdated $9 charge for lost locks because locks are now attached to lockers, and adding a QR code that will link to a Google map of elementary school boundaries.

The most consequential change would align elementary grading and honor-roll criteria with practices at Speedway Junior High and Speedway High School. Mr. Disney summarized the proposed elementary grading scale as an A of 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 65–69 and F below 65; the honor-roll criteria would also be standardized so a high honor roll is all A's and regular honor roll is A's and B's. "If approved, the universal grading scale ... An A would be 90 to a 100, a B would be 80 to 89," he said.

Board members asked procedural questions about where the high-school grading scale appears in the handbook and confirmed the universal elementary changes would cover grades 1–6 while kindergarten remains standards-based. Mr. Disney said if substantive legislative changes occur later, staff will return to the board with updates.

A board member moved to approve the handbook as presented; another seconded. The president called for the vote and announced the motion "Passes 5 to 0." The board directed staff to bring any substantial changes back after the legislative session.

The handbook vote was a formal board action; there was no recorded amendment in the meeting and trustees did not request an immediate change to the adopted scale.
