Henrico school board highlights award-winning programs, student performances and exchange visit

Henrico County School Board recognized 22 programs for national awards, heard performances from Holman Middle School Chorus, and welcomed German exchange students at Godwin High School during its Nov. 13 meeting.
The Henrico County School Board on Nov. 13 recognized numerous division programs honored by the National Association of Counties and showcased student performances and international exchange experiences.
Doctor Cashwell opened the meeting and invited students from Knuckles Farm Elementary School to lead the pledge of allegiance. "I am Crystal Metzger, the proud principal of Knuckles Farm Elementary," Crystal Metzger said as she introduced the students who led the pledge.
Christopher Mosley, the division education specialist for performing arts, introduced the Holman Middle School Chorus, directed by Lizzie Williamson, which performed selections to honor veterans week. "Tonight, they will perform 2 selections, the Star Spangled Banner as we honor our veterans this week," Mosley said.
The board recognized 22 HCPS programs that earned NACo awards, including expansions in robotics (from two pilot programs to more than 40 participating schools), K–5 digital learning and computer science lessons, an inclusive chess initiative that drew about 400 attendees, and a specialization cohort program that provides a permanent 4.8% salary increase for teachers who complete it. Presenters named multiple staff and program leads accepting plaques and described community partnerships supporting CTE and workforce programming.
Staff also highlighted mental-health and family-support initiatives — such as expanded on-campus clinical access, student teletherapy, and a family resource clothing closet — as well as a new eSports program intended to engage students in math and critical-thinking activities.
The board welcomed German teachers and 10 visiting students from Mandelich Gymnasium in Hamburg at Godwin High School, who described excursions around Virginia and plans for a reciprocal visit next summer. Students and host families recounted cultural differences and educational contrasts during the exchange.
The meeting closed the recognition segment by thanking staff and students for the division's work and national recognition; no formal board action was required on the recognitions.
