Volunteer David Perry, speaking as a 47-year Blue Island resident, told the council on Feb. 10 that the Blue Island Stray Dog Project has grown from a volunteer effort into an Illinois-licensed 501(c)(3) organization that partners with the Blue Island Police Department to handle stray-animal intake.
Perry said the group provides intake evaluation, lost-dog listings, vaccination, spay/neuter, foster placement, and transfers to reputable rescues. He reported the group handled "over 100 dogs" in 2025, transferred 35 to rescues, found adoptive homes for 34, and that the organization spent "over $30,000" on bedding last year. He described roughly 45 volunteers and announced upcoming fundraisers, thanking the city for support.
The presentation was a public-comment update and did not include a formal request for city funding during the meeting. Perry said 100% of contributions go directly to dog care and encouraged community assistance and attendance at fundraising events planned for March or April and later in September.
