American Fork honors lifeguards credited with saving pool patron’s life

Mayor opened the meeting with a recognition of city lifeguards who responded to a July 12 pool emergency, presenting the "American Fork Heroes Award" and declaring Aug. 12, 2025, American Fork City Lifeguards Day. The mayor said the lifeguards "went above and beyond" and that "your actions stand as a shining example of what it means to serve with heart, honor, and integrity."
City staff described the response: lifeguards supported the patient above water, removed her from the pool, administered care while another staffer called 911, and continued life‑saving measures until American Fork Fire and Rescue arrived. Paramedics reported the patient was initially in an unsustainable rhythm, required defibrillation and CPR, and was later found to have a pulse and be breathing following continued care.
An aquatics staff member with 25 years of experience said after reviewing video and incident reports she was "just really grateful" for the youthful staffers who acted decisively. Council members and attendees thanked the lifeguards by name: Marie Hoya, Spencer Gigi, (Molly/"Moe" as spoken) Gigi, Gabby Lindsey and Leighton Hornsby. The council posed for photographs and presented wall plaques to the employees.
The award is ceremonial; no council action was required. The city said it will maintain training and support for aquatics staff going forward.
