Cedar Springs board adopts clearer weapons policy language to align with law

The Cedar Springs Public Schools Board of Education approved a revision to Policy 72‑17 (weapons) during its Jan. 19 meeting after staff presented updated language drafted with outside counsel.
Board staff said attorney Marshall from the law firm Clark Hill reviewed state statutes and recommended wording changes to clarify what counts as a weapon on campus and to ensure staff are protected when they take reasonable action to protect students. "This is the policy language that he has recommended that we consider for adaption," staff said.
Trustees discussed the intent behind earlier drafts — which were written in part to address a penal-code provision that can be broad in describing "anything that could be used as a weapon" — and emphasized the need for precise wording so that the policy does not create unintended confusion or unsafe interpretations. One trustee said the updated language will provide necessary protections for staff in an emergency while making prohibited conduct clear.
A motion to adopt the recommended revision was called; trustees recorded affirmative responses in a roll-call vote and the motion carried.
The revised policy is effective immediately and staff will circulate the updated policy language and any guidance to schools and employees.
