Cherokee Nation announces scholarship deadline, STEM Fest and accreditation updates; Sequoia reports tournament and school plans

Aaron Emberton, standing in for Mark Vance, told the Cherokee Nation Education Committee that the renewal deadline for spring college scholarships will be Jan. 20 and that an earlier date listed in the written report (Jan. 16) has been revised to allow students time to return to school and finish materials.
Emberton also highlighted two recruitment and outreach items: a STEM Fest at the Chota Conference Center on Jan. 21 with two sessions at 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and a recent Educational Pathways Summit that Emberton said included more than 55 colleges and technical schools and drew roughly 300 attendees. "So again that'll be January 20," Emberton said of the scholarship renewal deadline, adding that staff will issue an official notice with the corrected date.
On accreditation and staff development, Emberton reported that accreditation validation visits are complete and results are expected in two to three months. He said 15 staff completed a 10-week family development course and will graduate, and he noted a strategic planning process with a completion target of Jan. 26.
Sequoia High School Superintendent Terry Eustace updated the committee on school activities, including the Sequoia Invitational Basketball Tournament and upcoming Tournament of Champions appearances, choir and band events, wrestling meets and powerlifting, and plans to offer ASVAB testing as another pathway for students. Eustace told the council the application period for a proposed new school will open after spring break.

Councilors asked clarifying questions about event times and thanked staff. The committee recorded no votes on these reports; business concluded with the next meeting tentatively scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12 at 3:00 p.m., and the council adjourned by motion.
