Aiken wins $2 million federal grant to replace Crosland Park water lines

The Aiken City Council heard on Feb. 9 that the city has secured $2,000,000 in congressional directed spending to replace aging water lines in the Crosland Park neighborhood.
City Manager (staff) told the council the EPA portion of the federal budget included a $2 million line item that the city will use, together with a local match from the city’s 1% sales tax, “to replace all the old water lines in Crosland Park.” The manager said the neighborhood’s original cast-iron lines were prone to discoloration and that nonmetal replacement materials will improve water quality and system resilience.
The manager credited Sen. Lindsey Graham’s office and William Clyburn Jr. for assisting the city in obtaining the allocation, and described the award as part of a larger effort: “This is, over $25,000,000 of congressional directed spending, for critical infrastructure,” he said.
The council did not debate the announcement at length; the manager characterized the work as ready to move forward and part of ongoing infrastructure priorities. The city will match the federal dollars with existing 1% sales-tax funds as the project advances through design and procurement.
Next steps: staff said it will return with implementation details and schedules as procurement and matching arrangements are finalized.
