The board unanimously approved contracts with Dell and Apple to replace student and teacher devices (laptops for grades 3–12, teacher devices preK–12, and iPads for preK–2). Administration said devices include tracking software, protective cases and warranties; sales/use tax will apply.
The Richland School District One board on Feb. 10 approved contracts with Dell Technologies and Apple to provide replacement devices for students and staff.
Ms. Hodges presented the recommended contract awards, saying purchases will include laptops (grades 3–12), devices for teachers (preK–12), and iPads for students in preK–2, and that the bids include tracking software, protective cases, warranties and charging accessories. She said the purchases are being made under the South Carolina state term contract for those vendors and that "the terms and conditions are deemed very reasonable."
Commissioner Devine asked whether sales and use tax applied to the purchases; Ms. Hodges responded, "Yes, sir. There will be sales to sales use tax due on these devices." Commissioner Bishop moved approval; the motion passed unanimously.
The administration said the contracts and the separate $6 million budget amendment are coordinated so that devices can be procured promptly. The board did not specify device counts in the public presentation; procurement and invoicing details will be handled by district staff under the approved contracts.
