Summary
The State of the Town showcased Florence Teen Council achievements, plans for a Florence FC youth academy and indoor facility, renovations at Jason Lopez Memorial Park including an inclusive playground funded in part by Florence Copper, and expanded recreation and senior services.
Demetrius, head coach for Florence FC, told attendees that the club launched a semi‑professional team last year and plans a Florence FC Academy to develop youth players; the club also hopes to build an indoor training facility that would serve year‑round practices and community events. “We want our town's youth to develop,” he said, describing how the team’s home games energized downtown activity.
Mayor Keith Eaton introduced members of the Florence Teen Council and asked students about leadership; teen council members described the leadership symposium, joint sessions with the town council, and goals such as improving crosswalks and historic home preservation. “If I could describe the Florence Teen Leadership Symposium in 1 word, I would use the word initiative,” one teen said.
Council members described park and recreation investments: the town renamed Heritage Park to Jason Lopez Memorial Park and completed rebuilt early‑childhood and youth playgrounds with ADA‑compliant equipment; council credited a $50,000 company contribution to the inclusive playground. The Aquatic Center recorded more than 11,000 admissions in 2025, and senior‑center programming expanded with new classes and resource fairs. Council also approved three new school resource officer positions and donated a retired fully serviced vehicle to the high school driver's‑education program.
Officials framed these items as part of a broader effort to strengthen opportunities for families and teens, and said programs such as the Teen Leadership Symposium will continue to expand with staff and council mentorship.
