The Appoquinimink board approved final construction documents for the Summit Campus middle and high school complex and authorized the documents to be released for bidding. The design includes a three-story high school, middle school, shared performing-arts center, field house and special-education spaces.
The Appoquinimink School District board approved construction documents for the Summit Campus middle and high school on Feb. 10 and authorized the design team to proceed to the bidding phase.
Construction director Mr. Hopkins and representatives from ABHA/BSNA presented the final design package. The campus plan places a middle school, a three-story high school and a shared performing-arts center around a central green with separate loops for visitor and bus circulation, a shared kitchen, a field house under stadium bleachers and a separate concessions building.
Designers described programmatic elements: academic wings, CTE labs (including STEM and aerospace), allied-health labs adjacent to biology/anatomy spaces, early-childhood areas, shared media center, and a concentration of RISE/special-education classrooms near the center of the campus. Renderings and floor plans were shown for classroom, cafeteria and auditorium adjacencies.
Board members asked whether the planned number of special-education classrooms will be adequate given rising special-education enrollment districtwide; the presenters said the plans are sized to meet current projections but cautioned that continued rapid growth could require future modifications. Mr. Hopkins said the approval is for bidding only; construction-phase approvals and contracts will return to the board after bids are received.
The motion to approve the construction documents to proceed to bid was made by Mr. Higgins, seconded by Mr. Abrams, and the motion carried.
