Colorado House adopts resolution celebrating Lunar New Year

The Colorado House on Feb. 11 adopted Senate joint resolution 26 0 1 0, formally joining Asian American communities in celebrating Lunar New Year 2026 and recognizing contributions of Asian Americans to the state.
Representative Soper, sponsor on the House side, introduced visiting guests including Acting Agricultural Commissioner Robert Sakata, the Consul General from Taiwan and members of the Lunar New Year Allies Advisory Group and Refugees and Immigrants United, and described the resolution as a historic first for the General Assembly. "This is a historic first, for Colorado to do a Lunar New Year resolution, within the General Assembly," Soper said.
Representative Wynne, who described receiving and distributing red envelopes in past years, urged members to support the resolution and noted that this year’s Lunar New Year falls on Feb. 17. Representative Espinosa, who said she hosts the Far East Center in her district, also rose in support and invited Coloradans to local Lunar New Year events.
Members briefly recessed for a lion-dance performance in the chamber gallery and returned to complete business. The House opened the electronic vote and the Clerk announced that the resolution passed with "60 aye votes, 5 excused, 0 no votes." The resolution’s text as read on the floor highlights the 2024 designation of an observed Lunar New Year Day and commends community leaders named in the reading.
The chamber’s ceremonial recognition followed members’ remarks about the cultural significance and growing visibility of Lunar New Year celebrations across the state. No formal fiscal measures were attached to the resolution. The House continued its legislative calendar after the vote.
