New downtown signs draw praise for branding but criticism for wayfinding

The Friendswood Downtown Economic Development Corporation reported completion of six new downtown signs and wayfinding installations, but several members said the signs do not perform well as directional aids for drivers.
Staff described the completed installations and said landscaping and paver work will follow. "The sign installation is complete downtown," Steven told the board, noting the signs include wayfinding and branding elements. Several members praised the look, calling the branding "fantastic," but one member criticized the signs as too small to read in normal traffic. "From a branding perspective, these are fantastic. From a wayfinding perspective, they fail," said an unidentified board member, adding that at approach speeds the signs are not visible early enough to direct drivers to destinations such as the library.
Board members discussed whether larger or additional directional signs could be added later; staff said there may be opportunities to add signage down the road and invited constituents to provide feedback. The board did not take formal action but asked staff to note the feedback for future design adjustments.
