Trustee Clark moved the appointment and Trustee Tyler seconded; the motion passed on a recorded vote of trustees present. The board had opened the evening for candidate interviews and allowed each applicant a fixed period to answer questions about their vision for the district, community engagement and how they would prioritize student needs.
The interview round produced repeated themes: several applicants stressed student-centered decision making and stronger community outreach. Larmendra Davis, a former board member and one of the nominees, said, "It's a pleasure to be back in this room again," and described a mission of ensuring "equitable resources" for every child in the district. Kevin Keyes III, a candidate and district alumnus who also taught in the district, said, "I am a proof that the Oak Park School District works," citing personal experience as evidence of the district's potential.
Not all trustees were satisfied with the schedule. An unnamed trustee objected at the start of the meeting, saying the interview process "could have, not been so rushed" and that the board should have had more time to discuss dates and procedures. The board president replied that the schedule reflected members' availability and confirmed that any deliberations on candidates would occur in public.
After nominations and multiple roll-call votes on candidates, the board enacted a resolution authorizing Rogers' appointment to serve the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2026. The resolution was read into the record and approved by a majority of trustees present.
The superintendent announced that Assistant Superintendent Shana Murphy will act with full authority while the superintendent is out of town next week, and that enrollment appears favorable pending the official October count. The board also discussed scheduling a short retreat to improve collaboration among trustees.
The board set its next regular meeting for Sept. 22, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the administration boardroom.
