Teachers showcase kindergarten play, first‑grade math and fourth‑grade reading pilots

Bushkill first‑grade teachers described an SPM focused on subitizing and math fluency. They explained a sequence of pre‑surveys, leveled color‑coded cards, slide‑based timers and a one‑minute cleanup routine. One teacher noted sending practice cards home to strengthen the home‑school connection and said students who used the cards at home showed faster progress.
Fourth‑grade teachers from Bushkill described efforts to reintroduce a love of reading through teacher read‑alouds, student journals, book reviews and a reading wall. They reported results from pre‑ and midyear surveys showing increased engagement and said the approach allows students to choose texts that interest them while teachers model reading habits.
Committee members asked for student survey results and expressed appreciation for teacher autonomy in choosing SPM topics. Presenters said they intend to refine observation tools, add CASEL standards where appropriate and share revised resources with district kindergarten teams next year.
Next steps: teachers will finish midyear surveys and share results with the committee; principals agreed to support districtwide sharing of the structured play notebook and SPM materials.
