Friends of the Franklin Botanical Gardens told the Parks and Trails Commission they are planning a spring volunteer work party and would like the commission’s support to set a date and publicize the event.
Ashley, who identified herself as a representative of the Friends group, said she has set up a private Facebook group for the group and suggested March or April as the season for a work party. Commissioners and volunteers tentatively settled on Saturday, March 28 as a target date to avoid conflicts with other local work parties and spring break. Ashley said she will reach out to city staff (Crystal and Caroline were discussed as points of contact) to coordinate publicity, including the city newsletter and local paper.
Ashley said she plans to bring Sophie (a GIS technician) and Gilly (vegetation manager with the Scappoose Bay Watershed Council) to tour the gardens and help prioritize invasive-removal work, and she noted English ivy and poison oak as priorities. Commissioners discussed scheduling, volunteer safety and logistics; they agreed to place the topic on next month’s agenda to finalize details and to ask staff to list the event in the city newsletter if the date is confirmed.
