Resident asks council to move accessible space; police and council refer issue for local study

Bristol — Sarah Castle (9 3rd School Street) asked the council to move a handicap parking space that she said impedes access to her driveway for ambulances and medical transport. She told the council the spot was originally installed for her late grandfather in 2017 but now makes daily access difficult amid increased student housing and curb congestion.
Police presented a video replication using large SUVs and said officers were able to exit the driveway in both directions during their test; the chief noted the space is currently used by a neighboring household with a handicapped child. Residents described instances of the van encroaching onto the driveway line and said shifting the space slightly along the block might ease access.
Council members agreed the issue could not be resolved that evening and unanimously voted to refer the matter to the town administrator and police chief to work with residents and return with a proposed recommendation at a future meeting.
