Trustees clarify patron conduct after reports of loud device use at exhibit opening

During the Feb. 10 meeting Trustee (S3) asked about the library's policy after observing four patrons using computers or devices without headphones during the Illinois Underground Railroad exhibit opening and feeling that the noise was distracting.
"There were multiple, like 4 people that were using their computers or, you know, some devices with no headphones...it was very loud," Trustee (S3) said. Library staff (S2) replied that the patron code of conduct covers any behavior that interferes with other patrons or staff and advised that incidents should be reported to staff so they can address them.
S2 noted that staff rely in part on patron education—if other patrons do not speak up, people may assume the behavior is acceptable—and said staff can have a conversation with the person or suggest alternatives such as using a study room. S2 also said earbuds are available to borrow from the upstairs area for patrons without personal headphones.
The exchange resulted in no policy change; staff reaffirmed existing enforcement practices and options available to patrons who seek quieter spaces. The board did not vote on revisions to the patron code of conduct during the meeting.
