At its Feb. 10 meeting the Urbana Free Library Board of Trustees voted to amend the FY26 budget to shift $20,000 to cover continued legal expenses associated with union negotiations.
"This is a $20,000 shifting of funds necessary for continued legal expenses associated with the, union negotiations," Chair (S1) said when introducing the amendment. Library staff (S2) told trustees the money will come from a budget line labeled "other centralized cost," which covers items such as database subscriptions and similar centralized expenses.
Trustee (S4) asked whether the board had underestimated legal needs when the budget was adopted; Library staff (S2) replied the early-year estimate was insufficient and said staff anticipates "2 to 4 more shifts throughout the fiscal year" for items including further legal fees. When Trustee (S3) asked where the funds were being shifted from, S2 responded the funds are being moved from the "other centralized cost" line that includes subscriptions such as OCLC.
The motion to approve the amendment was made on the record (mover: Unidentified Speaker (S1); second: Trustee (S4)). Chair (S1) called for a voice vote and the amendment passed.
Votes at a glance: agenda approval and consent agenda were approved earlier in the meeting by voice; the FY26 budget amendment passed by voice as above; the meeting adjourned by voice vote.
Fiscal detail and next steps: the amendment reallocates $20,000 within FY26; staff indicated the change is a stopgap and that additional budget maintenance requests may follow if legal needs continue through the fiscal year. The transcript did not include a roll-call tally or named vote counts for the amendment.
The board has scheduled its next regular meeting and did not set additional, specific budget deadlines during the session.
