Burrillville committee says turf field playing surface complete; receives $1 million in federal grants for stadium improvements

The Burrillville School Committee on Feb. 10 was told the new artificial turf playing surface is essentially finished, though work remains on the press box, concession stand, field house and an ADA-accessible viewing plaza.
Superintendent Dr. Solito said crews completed the playing surface and that contractors are now focusing on surrounding structures and accessibility features. "The press box and concession stand and field house, handicap-accessible viewing plaza re under discussion now and should be moving along pretty quickly," he said.
Dr. Solito told the committee the project received two grant awards tied to Congressman Seth Magaziner's office: an initial $500,000 and a newly announced additional $500,000 to help cover costs for the viewing plaza and concessions. "That was recently announced," he said, adding the extra funding will be applied to the concessions and the accessible viewing area to ensure it is fully usable by people using wheelchairs.
Committee members asked about a possible ribbon-cutting and were told a grand opening might be scheduled in the fall after remaining pieces are completed. The superintendent said spring games are expected to be played on the field while finishing work continues.
The update did not include a new vote or contract award at the meeting; members received the status report and confirmed that construction-related work remains.
The district noted the work on the site included remediation following a frozen pipe incident at Callahan earlier in the winter, which had been assessed and addressed by facilities staff and an external team called in to evaluate water damage.
Next steps include completing the concession/press-box elements, finalizing accessibility features, coordinating with the town on any grand-opening plans and continuing scheduled spring athletics.
