Brookings students highlight community service and hygiene drive at school board meeting

Student leaders from Brookings High School and Mickelson Middle School told the school board on Feb. 9 that their chapters are concentrating on community service and leadership development.
Members of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) described recent projects including donations to nursing homes, a harvest table, Frostfest for young children, and a career fair run in partnership with FFA, HOSA and Educators Rising. Students reported that six Brookings High School members attended the national FCCLA leadership conference in Orlando and that two students from the district won region officer posts: Aylish Crinion as region secretary and Rachel Everhart as region 4 treasurer. ‘‘Neighbors nourished’’ and other food drives were cited as ongoing service efforts.
HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) representatives Amelia Wendell (reporter) and Laura Mortnam (president) said their chapter shifted this year from focusing on childhood food insecurity to addressing childhood hygiene insecurity. They told the board that, locally, ‘‘about 1 in 6 children’’ in Brookings County face basic hygiene insecurity and that nationally roughly one in five students lack consistent access to basic personal-care items; presenters tied those conditions to missed school days, bullying and lower academic performance. The students asked the district to support a hygiene-drive fundraiser running Feb. 9–18. Donations may be dropped off at the high school main office; suggested items include soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. The chapter said it is offering incentives for student participation, including extra credit and a raffle prize.
Board members thanked the student presenters, noted the district’s history of supporting FCCLA, and asked for contact information for advisers; students identified Paul Bisker as the HOSA adviser (who teaches anatomy, AP biology and biomedical science) and noted FCCLA advisers Mrs. Page and Mrs. Stroud were present.
The presentations were delivered as part of Career and Technical Education Month and drew brief board discussion but no immediate policy action. The board moved on to committee reports and administrative updates after the student presentations.
