Students perform at Brighton board meeting as district marks School Board Recognition Week

The Brighton Central School District used its Oct. 15 board meeting to honor board members during School Board Recognition Week with five performances from the district’s visual and performing arts students.
Sarah Sebel introduced the program and thanked the board for supporting arts opportunities. Students presented a trumpet duo, an acapella group and several dance performers and described how district support made the performances possible.
"Because of this, I would like to give a special thank you to doctor McGowan for supporting the visual and performance arts," student Juliana said as part of her introduction. The students said the performances were intended as a "gift of gratitude" to the board.
Jamie Porta, president of the Brighton Teachers Association, read a memorandum of appreciation and a proposed proclamation praising board service and collaboration with the superintendent. Porta said the memorandum was negotiable contract language offered in a spirit of appreciation and urged residents to recognize the board’s volunteer work.
Board members thanked performers and staff, noted the district captured the performances on video, and accepted a student gift and a recognition from the Monroe County School Boards Association.
The meeting proceeded to regular business after the recognition segment.
