District says middle-school clinic, SEL and trauma-informed work will expand mental-health supports

Brighton district presenters told the board Feb. 25 that a middle-school clinic-site partnership with URMC, SEL survey development and trauma-informed (TIC) program evaluation are underway to address an active wait list and district mental-health needs.
District leaders presented the quarterly "blueprint" update on mental health and student supports at the Brighton Central School District Board of Education meeting on Feb. 25. Presenters said the district is expanding in-school clinical access and aligning professional learning with program evaluation.
A mental-health team member said the district and URMC recommended establishing a stand-alone clinic-based site at the middle school next year to reduce waiting lists and increase access; the presenter described an active wait list as a primary driver for the decision. The team outlined ongoing professional learning, including trauma-informed care (TIC) work, and said district experts and outside consultants are helping to build building-level consultation and SEL survey work.
The presenter credited Parent University and local partners for outreach and noted Meg Goodman is convening a small grandparents'guardian support group. The update tied the mental-health work directly to budget planning, noting that sustained services and staff capacity are part of budget choices for 2025'26.
District staff said a program-evaluation process is underway to develop surveys and measures of student needs and program effectiveness and that extended-school-year planning is in progress. Presenters emphasized aligning supports with IEPs and special-education needs.
The board asked no substantive follow-up questions at the time of the presentation. The district plans further professional development and evaluation work and will report back as surveys and evaluations are completed.
