Brighton honors custodian and students with Believers awards at 12 Corners Middle School

The Brighton Central School District opened its Jan. 21 public meeting at 12 Corners Middle School by recognizing staff and students with Brighton Believers awards for "integrity, respect, responsibility, kindness and self‑control," officials said. Dan Paschal, a TCMS custodian, was honored for multiple incidents in which he intervened to protect students, including extinguishing a microwave fire and performing the Heimlich maneuver on a choking child.
Dr. McGowan described Paschal's actions as "quick thinking, calm demeanor, and decisive" and credited him with preventing a building evacuation after the microwave incident. The board presented Paschal the award and thanked him for his service to students and staff.
The board also recognized a group of seventh‑grade boys who assisted a classmate after a serious on‑field injury: one student called 911, others directed the ambulance and several stayed with the injured child until help arrived. Principal Dr. Danielle Edmonds and Dr. McGowan praised the students for their composure and leadership, noting the dispatcher complimented the caller's clarity.
The awards segment concluded with the board thanking TCMS staff and hosting personnel for their work in supporting students and the meeting.
