Platteville releases draft comprehensive plan update; public hearing set for March 2

Planning staff presented the draft 2026 comprehensive plan update and told the council it is available for public review. Written comments are requested by Feb. 26 so the Planning Commission can summarize them ahead of a public hearing scheduled for March 2; the commission will then make a recommendation to council, with tentative council action possible in March.

Planner Joe (Joel) said the draft updates the future land‑use map in several peripheral areas and introduces a mixed‑use residential/commercial category in border areas near existing commercial corridors. He said most changes reflect public input received during outreach sessions and staff and regional‑planning recommendations. Staff also flagged that the current plan will add definitions for low, medium and high residential density (units per acre) and that proposed numbers will be distributed in the staff report a week before the planning‑commission hearing.

Council members asked for clearer color coding on maps, insertion of waterways on the new map, and greater clarity between medium and high density areas; staff agreed to update map colors and to provide density‑definition recommendations in the staff report before the public hearing.

Next steps: staff will accept written comments through Feb. 26, present a public hearing and recommendation at the March 2 Planning Commission meeting, and forward a recommendation and revised documents to council for possible March action.
