Bay County Fair Board representatives told the Board of Commissioners on Feb. 10 that the fairgrounds’ internal roadways and entrances are in poor condition and need repair, and that the fair board intends to apply for a 2026 infrastructure grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
A Fair Board representative (speaker 9) said snow cover has delayed site visits and formal bids, so the board does not yet have detailed cost estimates. The fair board plans to include roadway and entrance work as priorities and will determine the final scope after bids are available. The application deadline cited in the meeting is March 13, with award notifications expected in May.
Chair (speaker 3) moved and the board approved a resolution allowing the fair board and county to pursue grant funding for fairgrounds infrastructure improvements. "We're looking at basically, infrastructure... the roadways that are really bad, need fixed up," the fair board representative said during the presentation.
Context and community impact: Fairgrounds roadways and entrances are used by event attendees, vendors and community groups. The fair board and recreation staff noted the grounds host senior activities (osteoarthritis classes) and other community programming; commissioners and attendees asked about parking and canopy placement concerns near the front entrance.
What's next: County staff will submit the application by the March 13 deadline and return to the board with bid results and any award notices for final funding or contract approvals.
