Burke County commissioners approved updates to the county's radiological emergency preparedness (REP) plans for Plant Vogel and for the county's plan related to nearby SRS.
Chief Matthews summarized the updates, saying they are largely wording changes recommended by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The plan updates include an updated population count for the 10‑mile Emergency Planning Zone (an increase of 20 people from last year), a clarified definition of a "general emergency," expanded mutual-aid details and security checkpoints for the Emergency Operations Center, and more detailed protective-action guidance distinguishing 'shelter in place' from 'go inside, stay inside.' Exercise requirements were expanded to include hostile‑action and ingestion‑pathway scenarios rather than only generic radiological drills. For SRS, the REP plan is identical except that the county would not send resources to SRS in a response.
Commissioner Bridal moved to approve the REP plans for Plant Vogel and SRS; the motion was seconded and approved.
Board members were provided a summary of the plan and told that a full copy is available in the county manager's office for review. The approval updates planning and drills but does not change operational response commitments to SRS.
