DA and Clean Energy Alliance updates delivered at San Marcos council meeting

At the Feb. 10 San Marcos City Council meeting, council members shared brief committee reports that included a District Attorney update and a Clean Energy Alliance report. Council member Musgrove summarized points from a briefing by District Attorney Summer Steffen, saying Steffen discussed Prop 36, theft and treatment options, homeless deaths related to drugs and elder fraud. According to the council member's report, the DA stated that since Prop 36, "3,321 felony cases have been filed," "3 percent of those arrested opted to go to jail," "96 percent deferred in lieu," and "of those, approximately 24 ended up in jail." The council asked to receive the DA's PowerPoint presentation for distribution among members.
Council member Nunez reported on the Clean Energy Alliance's first meeting of 2026, noting the board reappointed chair Katie Melendez and vice chair Christian Garcia and that the board "approved [a] rate increase unanimously." Nunez said the Clean Energy Alliance will present to the council on Feb. 24 and encouraged the public to attend the advisory committee meeting on Feb. 12, which will be held in person and via Zoom.
No council actions on the DA report or Clean Energy Alliance matters were recorded during the Feb. 10 meeting; councilors requested copies of the DA presentation and scheduled a fuller Clean Energy Alliance briefing for a future meeting.
