Alvin ISD board approves consent items, schedules May election, accepts superintendent's retirement and hires TASB for search

At its meeting, the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees approved a series of routine and governance items and took several personnel and procedural actions.
The board approved consent agenda items B through H by a voice vote recorded as 7–0 and later approved a corrected version of the January board minutes after trustees identified a needed change to a closed-session item (motion carried 7–0).
Under a statutory compliance item tied to Senate Bill 1189 (89th Texas Legislature), board staff recommended against adopting a district policy to establish a daily period of prayer and reading of religious texts; Trustee Garza moved that the board not adopt such a policy and the motion carried 7–0.
Trustees called the 2026 trustee election for May 2, 2026, for Positions 6 and 7, and approved the district's participation in the countywide joint election conducted by Brazoria County (motions carried 7–0). Trustees discussed voter access and whether county clerks can place polling sites at schools; board members said the county typically controls poll site selection but that the district will cooperate if the clerk requests school sites when appropriate.
The board also approved the federal single audit certificate following completion of the OMB compliance supplement review and approved a resolution to address compensation for employees affected by the Jan. 26 weather closure.
In executive-session actions, trustees directed the superintendent and the district attorney to proceed with settlement steps discussed in closed session related to a 504 student matter (motion carried 7–0). The board accepted Superintendent Carol Nelson's retirement and the voluntary separation agreement (motion carried 7–0) and voted to select TASB Executive Search Services to run the superintendent search (motion carried 7–0).
Several personnel hires were approved and Lauren Chance was approved as assistant principal at Alvin Junior High. The board adjourned at the meeting's close.
