Oakland issues Juneteenth and Pollinator Week proclamations; consent agenda approved

The Town of Oakland Commission used its June 10 meeting to issue two proclamations, approve a consent agenda and hear public and staff updates.
Mayor Shea Taylor read a Juneteenth proclamation recognizing June 19, 2025, as a day to "celebrate Juneteenth and urge all citizens to join in this celebration." The mayor also read a proclamation declaring June 23 through June 29, 2025, National Pollinator Week in Oakland and encouraged residents to participate in activities that support pollinator habitat.
A motion to approve the consent agenda was offered and seconded; the chair called for the ayes and the consent agenda was approved by voice vote. The meeting record shows the standard "Aye" response from members present.
During the public forum a resident noted cleanup activity at local cemeteries after Memorial Day and asked that the commission follow up with a formal letter encouraging volunteer headstone-cleaning; the speaker said a local, privately owned group had undertaken cemetery cleaning but that additional permission or encouragement for volunteers was still outstanding.
Staff provided a brief budget update and said the first formal budget work session will take place at the next commission meeting. Personnel announcements included recruitment for a utility-billing clerk, a part-time nature-preserve position, a reserve police officer and a code-enforcement officer. A community event, "Saving Oakland's Eaglets," is scheduled for June 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Arts and Heritage Center and will feature the Audubon Center and photographer Wei Sheng Chen.
Other staff items included a planned acorn installation in a roundabout and scheduling of relocation for a nuisance alligator at Lake Apopka after water-management crews declined to work in the area. Commissioners also raised resident concerns about late-night mowing and algae in John's Lake and discussed a proposed local heritage-walk program in coordination with the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation.
The meeting proceeded to other agenda items after the announcements and public comments were closed.
