Trustees split on giving notice to regional visitor bureau; motion to withdraw tied and fails

Trustees considered a motion to notify the regional Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVV) that the Village of Weston intended to withdraw and to direct staff to negotiate a new contract to be executed by Jan. 1.
Proponents said the CVV's marketing materials and reporting did not sufficiently represent Weston and recommended giving formal notice to prevent automatic renewal and to create leverage for a revised agreement. Opponents and other trustees urged caution, noting the tourism commission had voted to keep the contract intact while working with the CVV to adjust reporting and funding formulas.
The motion on the floor would have given 30-day notice to the CVV (a Sept. 4 notice date was discussed in remarks) while staff and the tourism commission continued negotiations on a replacement contract. Board members and staff discussed reporting requirements, the share of hotel-room tax dollars paid to the CVV, and the CVV's obligation to show local promotion in marketing materials.
The motion was called and returned a 3–3 tie in voice/roll-call; under board rules that meant the motion failed. The current contract remains in effect; trustees and the tourism commission said they will continue work with the CVV on reporting, program criteria and an amended contract language to better ensure promotion of Weston-specific events and accountability for funds. Several trustees requested that staff and the village attorney prepare draft contract language and reporting templates for future packets.
Public comment during the agenda item had raised similar concerns about regional representation in the CVV's published materials earlier in the meeting.
