Summary
The Hawaiian Gardens City Council unanimously approved two $5,000 donations on Feb. 11: one to Community Family Guidance Center to support children's mental-health services and one to Hawaiian Elementary School to fund college- and career-readiness field trips for TK–6 students.
The Hawaiian Gardens City Council on Feb. 11 unanimously approved two $5,000 donations from the city’s allocated donation budget.
Bill Cinco, executive director of the Community Family Guidance Center, described the nonprofit’s 50-year history and services for children and families across Southeast Los Angeles County. "We are celebrating 50 years this year," Cinco said, noting the agency provides both clinic- and school-based care and accepts Medi-Cal while also fundraising to serve families who lack coverage. Council approved the staff-recommended $5,000 donation to CFGC by roll call.
The council also approved a $5,000 donation to Hawaiian Elementary School to offset costs for college- and career-readiness field trips for TK through sixth graders. Principal Maria Perez Brenna said, "The request is for college and career field trips," and explained the school’s AVID program aims to expose students to both college and trade options. Staff reported the school serves 295 Hawaiian Gardens students who are ages 4–12.
Why it matters: The donations come from the city’s $20,000 annual donations allocation and are intended to expand access to mental-health supports and exposure to post–secondary opportunities for local children. Both motions passed unanimously, with council members recorded as voting "Yes." The city will disburse funds according to the donation policy and the approved uses described by each recipient.
What’s next: Recipients will coordinate logistics with city staff; CFGC invited residents to a children's benefit dinner in May and said outreach materials would be left for the community.
