Whitehall‑Coplay School District told the committee on Monday it will transition kindergarten and first‑grade reporting from traditional letter grades to a standards‑based grading system beginning in 2025–26.
Speakers said the district has been communicating the change through a February letter, Sunday parent updates and short explanatory videos tied to the district's 'profile of a graduate' work. “Starting in the 2025–26 school year, we will be transitioning from traditional grading to a standards based grading system in kindergarten and first grade,” a presenter said. The district has produced 10 short videos; two were shown to the committee focused on characteristics such as problem solving and adaptability. A parent and family guide and a website section dedicated to standards‑based grading are available for families.
District staff emphasized family outreach and teacher preparation: the transition will include examples on report formats, changes to progress reporting and links to resources on the district website. Staff said they will follow up with additional reports to the May education committee.
