Foster School nears completion; AV/security bid and contingency remain open

Kirby presented photographic progress on Foster School construction: elevator installation is finished, classroom finishes and most interior work are substantially complete, bathrooms and science spaces show tile and casework installed, and the kitchen equipment has been ordered but awaits flooring completion and delivery. Exterior site work and digging in city streets cannot proceed until the city’s April 15 permitting window opens.
Kirby said roughly 28% of the construction work remains and that contingency allowances remain (~$2.2M noted in the meeting). He said one outstanding procurement — an AV/security camera contract — is due to return to the board for bid-award approval after responses arrive around Feb. 20; the AV/security package has an internal budget of $500,000 and staff hope to come in under that number.
Board members asked about timeline for final contingency reconciliation; Kirby said June (punch-list/final checklists) is the target for a clear accounting of remaining allowances and any returns to contingency. He also described options for a video walk-through and confirmed the gym floor will be a K–5 standard (not a wood high-school floor), and noted that some city cooperation (permit timing, TIF support for some elements) has reduced costs elsewhere in the project.
No final approvals were required at the meeting beyond direction to return with the AV/security bid for board action.
