After public pleas, Moraga council agrees to agendize proposal to fly pride flag and to post unity letter

Several Moraga residents urged the town council to take visible actions on two related community concerns: public display of a letter condemning antisemitic remarks and erecting a pride flag in June.

Lisa Disbrow, a 20‑plus‑year resident, thanked the mayor for Moraga’s inclusion in a multi‑jurisdictional "letter of unity" criticizing statements by Eduardo Martinez and asked the council to post the signed letter in a location on the town website where residents could easily find it. "I searched, I searched, I searched. Maybe I'm not that good at research but I couldn't find it and I think it would be an important statement given the rise of antisemitism here," Disbrow said.

During the public‑comment period, Wendell Baker (Moraga I Kind project), Sherry Sweeney and Michael Gaffney urged the council to allow the pride flag to be raised in June, describing the flag as a sign of safety and inclusion for LGBTQ residents and youth. Gaffney listed neighboring East Bay cities that fly the flag and said symbolic gestures matter to vulnerable community members.

In response, Council Member Teal moved to agendize a full staff report and formal discussion about raising the pride flag in June; the motion carried unanimously. Council requested a comprehensive staff report detailing options and any ordinance or policy considerations.

Town staff also said they could make the letter of unity more visible on the town website and volunteered to assist with locating and posting the document. The council did not adopt a new policy tonight; it agreed only to receive a staff report at a future meeting.
