Members of BikePed and Parks & Rec told the commission they spent months mapping desired sign locations and wording and now propose a focused Phase 1 pilot to bring people into the town core.
"We now have a specific set of recommendations for 14 signs," a BikePed representative said, noting some signs are two‑sided and the effort amounts to about 20 sign faces. The plan centers on directing people from key corridors to downtown dining, the Crystal Trail, the library, the rec center and park facilities.
Staff reported trustees approved a contract with Carbondale Arts to provide design services for a unified signage family. A staff presenter explained it is "literally $20,000 contract" to create consistent signs and design guidelines so that future park and town signage follows the same standards. Commissioners said the Chamber committed about $10,000 to the project and discussed timing for possible prototype signs to appear for Bridal Bike Week.
Discussion covered phased implementation, materials and legibility: commissioners urged readable signs for cyclists (visible at bike speed), durability to resist disintegration, and design guidelines that allow inexpensive replacement in later phases. Staff said Carbondale Arts will produce sign sizes and a design kit so parks, arts and other town entities can use consistent templates going forward.
Next steps: staff will coordinate input from BikePed and Parks & Rec with Carbondale Arts, review the trustees’ packet materials, and consider a prototype sign and public rollout tied to an event (Bridal Bike Week) if timing allows.
