The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 27 approved an amendment to the county’s Roadway Safety Signage Audit construction‑management contract to provide oversight during renewed installation work.
Michael Martin, public works director, said the project had been paused after public and supervisor concerns about the number and placement of signs. "We put a pause on that project, kinda went back to the drawing board and kind of reevaluated how the resources should be deployed," Martin said, describing a redesign with a more conservative approach and fewer signs. He introduced project manager Jen Herndon, who explained that reengagement of construction management and inspectors required additional funding so the team can approve revised plans and oversee installation.
The board approved amendment A02 to agreement 120021302 with Consort Amer North America Inc., increasing the maximum payable by $203,800 to a total not to exceed $632,720.25. Supervisors requested that staff share revised plans and schedules with the public before work resumes to avoid the unexpected sign installations that prompted earlier complaints. The motion passed 5–0.
Public commenters and supervisors emphasized timely public notice and improved on‑site management during future installations. Project staff said the contractor has signs in inventory and is eager to remobilize once the revised plans and oversight team are in place.
