The Needham Conservation Commission reviewed a proposed redesign of the Ridge Hill trail map and kiosk signs on Feb. 12, with staff seeking to simplify colors, create clearer through‑loops, and remove or rename seldom‑used or dead‑end routes.
Tim (conservation staff) said the goal is to reduce visual clutter on kiosk maps, consolidate main loops (for example, renaming a through line the Pine Grove Trail), and decommission the Fit Trail designation because many stations are inoperable. Commissioners recommended tightening colors further, adding mileage for main loops, marking dead ends more clearly, and exploring dashed‑line symbology for minor connector trails.
Several commissioners proposed family‑oriented improvements: an interpretive 'story walk' or rotating children's book displays along the Pine Grove loop to encourage families and young children to use the trails. Tim said the town GIS manager will prepare a formal digital draft for review.
