Brighton board hears back-to-school updates as gyms undergo construction

The Brighton Central School District Board of Education heard a student representative report and construction and operations updates at its Sept. 3 meeting as the district opened the 2024'025 school year.
Dagny, the newly introduced student representative, said the first day of school included senior sunrise, Link Crew orientation for new students, and initial planning for homecoming activities. Dagny noted the pep rally is scheduled for Sept. 19, the parade likely on Oct. 1 with a kickoff around noon, and the homecoming dance will be held at the middle school from 7 to 10 p.m. because of ongoing high school gym construction.
District leaders updated the board on two active gym projects. Speaker 2 and a district buildings representative named Lou said crews are working aggressively on deadlines; the board discussed target reopenings of Oct. 1 for the French Road gym and Oct. 31 for the high school gym. School leaders emphasized the amount of behind-the-scenes infrastructure work'HVAC, electrical and plumbing'that must be completed before final finishes such as gym floors can be installed.
The board also shared PTSA activity highlights: Monica Alonji and her PTSA team supported welcome events including a food-truck rodeo and spirit wear distribution. The board announced Daniel Castillo will assume a new school board representative role next month, per a PTSA note.
Superintendent remarks praised staff, transportation and buildings-and-grounds personnel for managing logistics to serve roughly 3,600 students and 600 staff on opening day. Board members thanked staff for preparations and reiterated a focus on mental health, academic excellence, and civil discourse in classrooms during an election season.
Administrative housekeeping included the board's schedule to hold future meetings "on the road" at district schools (Sept. 17 at Council Rock; Oct. at French Road; Dec. at the high school; Jan. at the middle school). The meeting concluded after approval of routine motions and consent items.
