Mayor Nikki Roberts addressed attendees at the Walt Nagorski Sports Complex at a combined Arbor Day and Earth Day event, praising local volunteers and donors and framing tree-planting as a long-term investment in Pennsauken Township.
Roberts said the celebration and the Shade Tree Commission's efforts are aimed at replenishing a canopy she described as having been ‘‘deeply affected by tree removal’’ over the past few decades because of storm damage, age and infrastructure work. "These are 2 important moments on our calendar that remind us just how vital nature is to the heart and health of our community," she said.
The mayor thanked members of the Shade Tree Commission for organizing the event and singled out Pennsauken resident and Shade Tree Commission member Donna Decker for a personal donation of trees. Roberts also thanked local businesses that contributed, naming Bryan's Green Thumb Landscaping for generous tree donations. "Donna, your passion for Pennsauken's green spaces is felt by all of us," Roberts said.
Roberts described the planting as practical as well as symbolic, saying the trees "will grow to shade our sidewalks, clean our air, and provide beauty and balance for generations to come." She urged continued community support and stewardship of the township's green spaces and closed the remarks with a thank-you to attendees.
The event functioned as a public recognition of ongoing tree-planting and canopy-restoration efforts rather than a formal municipal vote or policy decision. No motions or votes were recorded at the event, and no new funding allocations or policy changes were announced.
