Panel approves 72-hour notice requirement for school-board agendas with emergency exemption

Senate Bill 269 would require local school boards to publish agendas at least 72 hours before regular meetings, with an amendment added in committee to exempt emergency meetings. Sponsor Senator Weiler and constituent Melanie Mortensen argued earlier and more-consistent agenda publication gives board members and the public time to review materials and weigh in.
School superintendents’ associations and some districts suggested 36 or 48 hours is more practical; several local board leaders said their current practice is to post agendas by Friday for a Thursday meeting. Commenters also noted that the Open and Public Meetings Act already requires public posting and asked why school boards alone are singled out.
The sponsor acknowledged the legislature’s truncated schedules during session but said school boards have regular meetings and should be given a longer notice window. After discussion the committee adopted the sponsor’s emergency exemption amendment, considered stakeholder feedback and voted to send the bill out as amended; the transcript records a committee vote of 3–2 in favor.
