The Suamico Village Board on Oct. 7 voted 4–1 to designate the village’s Public Health & Safety committee as the body responsible for determining dangerous and potentially dangerous dog designations, and directed that committee to consider an option for rescinding a designation after an 18‑month review period.
Administrator Caker presented the topic following a recent appeal. Trustees debated whether delegation would reduce the board’s workload or cede an elected body’s responsibility; concerns were raised about liability tied to any 18‑month removal option and whether the village was giving up part of its duty. Administrator Caker said the route preserves judicial appeals (circuit court) if a resident seeks review beyond committee or board decisions.
Trustee Eckert voted against the motion, stating concerns about the merging of potentially dangerous and dangerous categories and potential liability implications. The motion passed on a roll call 4–1 (Trustee Eckert dissenting). The committee will study the process and make recommendations back to the village board if changes to the ordinance are needed.
